How MAF Benefitted from Moving to Drupal

Morris Animal Foundation, based in Denver, Colorado, USA, has been bridging science and resources to advance the health of animals for the last 75 years. The Foundation offers donors an opportunity to commemorate a pet that has passed away with donations funding a memorial brass plaque on the physical walls of the office.

The Foundation was using the WordPress WooCommerce tool to maintain its web content. In 2018, they shifted to Drupal CMS and, in 2022, launched the Furever Memorials project to provide an online memorial for dogs, cats and other animals.

Migration to Drupal allowed them to add more features to the animal memorials, like filtering the gallery, donating to another person’s memorial, and commenting on memorials.

Since the relaunch, the Foundation has seen increased creation of memorials by 66 times more in a similar period though part of that is driven by increased promotion we can now do for the feature. As a result, organic traffic to memorials increased by 212% when comparing periods with similar levels of marketing. We also see solid adoption of the new commenting and donating features.

Why Drupal?

Elevated Third, who took over the project to rebuild Foundation’s website, chose Drupal CMS for its robust content management capabilities. Since then, the Foundation has committed to more and more projects leveraging Drupal for the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study project site and the Morris Animal Foundation Data Commons.

Standardizing on a platform helps the team to be more impactful. Standardizing on Drupal, in particular, is a great way to get a content management system and web application framework in one package. Using Drupal 8 has provided an easy, predictable upgrade process.

Here is a detailed case study on the Morris Animal Foundation Drupal implementation project.
