UX Gone Wrong At DrupalCon Europe 2021 Online Events?

UX Issue Causes Stress at DrupalCon

DrupalCon Europe 2021 online event seems to have triggered an information overload sensation for participants. Few participants tweeted feeling ‘overwhelmed’ by the whole experience on the first day. With too many columns, tabs and buttons on the event page, participants were finding it hard to find what they were looking for. Also with so many things happening on the page, people were finding it difficult to stay focused.

The DrupalCon Europe 2021 is on right now. It started on October 4th and will conclude on October 7th, 2021. It is one of the two main Drupal Conferences that are held every year. The other one being DrupalCon North America. Owing to the Covid 19 pandemic, the event is online just like last year. DrupalCon is on the Hopin Technical Events Platform.

This sensation of information overload on an event platform shows the importance of UX/UI even on an events page. Information overload in the context of a website is the excess of information available to a page visitor. It can impede the person from getting what they are looking for, can cause time loss, feeling of frustration which all reflect poorly on the user experience of that site.

That is why it is important to do a User Experience(UX) or User Interface (UI) design on a page. The design should be such that site visitors are able to find intuitively what they are looking for and easily navigate through the site. The page layouts should be such that it does not distract the user from the task at hand but still be able to find other helpful resources.

Gabor Hojtsy, the Drupal Initiative Co-ordinator at Acquia shared few quick fix tips helpful for desktop users.

  • Calendar Icon has a popup of the current things (labelled Now). Ignore the rest
  • Stash away sidebar with the arrow
  • “Hallway track” sessions provide a friendly talking place with small number of folks which  you can preview before joining.

As Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India said” Mistakes increase your experience and experience decreases your mistakes. If you learn from your mistakes then others learn from your success.” He also said, ”Creativity is seeing the same thing but thinking differently” which is so true for UX designing. Sans these minor hiccups, DrupalCon Europe 2021 is one event no true Drupalist can ever miss!. It is still the place to be for any Drupal follower this time of the year!
