Major Drupal.org Updates in Fourth Quarter 2021

Drupal.org on 11th March, 2022 released an update for the Fourth Quarter of 2021, summing up all the important news and achievements from the past year. The update covered Drupal lifecycle updates, initiatives, and team augmentations.

Drupal lifecycle updates included Drupal 8 end of life in the last quarter of 2021 and the extension of Drupal 7 Support till 1st November 2023. It also included the announcement of the end of Drupal 6 long-term support after 8 years of community support and an additional six years of long-term support. The end of Drupal 6 LTS is scheduled for October 2022.

Drupal initiatives covered regular Drupal initiative meetings held by the Drupal Association and the moving of the Drupal community’s code collaboration features into GitLab to adapt GitLab as the Drupal community’s collaboration tool fully.

The update also talked about welcoming Irina Zaks, Caleb Crawley, and Fran Garcia-Linares to the Drupal Association engineering team on a contract basis. Irina Zaks is helping with project management for the GitLab Acceleration initiative. Caleb Crawley is working on Drupal.org features and helping prepare for Drupal 9 updates. Fran Garcia-Linares is working on updating api.drupal.org to Drupal 9.

They will soon announce the first quarter 2022 update in April.
