Drupal's Evolution: Major Release Schedule and Drupal 11 on the Horizon

Drupal's development trajectory unveils a new major release schedule, ushered in with Drupal 10 and a commitment to launching a major version every two years in even-numbered years. Under this framework, Drupal 10, set to be supported until the release of Drupal 12 in mid-late 2026, exemplifies the community's dedication to providing robust support and security coverage.

The support duration for each major version spans approximately two years, followed by an additional two years of maintenance support and security coverage. This structured approach ensures a smooth transition and aligns with the broader Drupal core release schedule.

Looking ahead, Drupal enthusiasts can anticipate the arrival of Drupal 11 in 2024, with potential release windows in June, August, or December. The specific release date will depend on the completion of beta requirements.

Notably, Drupal 11's alpha development phase opens this week, initiating changes that diverge from Drupal 10 under the continuous upgrade path. The community encourages active participation in completing the requirements for Drupal 11, fostering collaboration through the #d11readiness channel on the Drupal community Slack.

As part of the evolution, Drupal 10's long-term support phase kicks off following the release of Drupal 11. During this phase, minor maintenance versions will be introduced every six months, incorporating a select set of changes backported from Drupal 11.

Site owners are advised to utilize supported PHP versions that align with the PHP core team's support cycle to ensure optimal ongoing support.

The announcement, a collaborative effort by Gábor Hojtsy, Dave Long, Jess, Nathaniel Catchpole, and Victoria Spagnolo emphasizes the community-driven commitment to Drupal's stability and evolution.
