In a collaborative effort, 1xINTERNET and The Icelandic Institute of Natural History (NÍ) have revitalized NÍ's digital landscape through a comprehensive upgrade from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9. As a key agency under the Ministry of the Environment, Energy, and Climate, NÍ is entrusted with extensive research and monitoring responsibilities concerning Iceland's natural environment.
The previous NÍ system, based on Drupal 7, faced obsolescence and required a modernized approach to integrate contemporary features and enhance functionalities. The 1xINTERNET design team undertook the challenge, focusing on optimizing the site for mobile accessibility while preserving its essence. The result is a sleek, responsive design that significantly improves user experience through enhanced navigation.
The migration process involved transferring content seamlessly from the old Drupal 7 site to the new Drupal 9 environment. Notable improvements include increased website speed, responsiveness, and mobile accessibility.
A standout feature of the upgraded website is the implementation of ElasticSearch for an enhanced search functionality named BIOTA search. This powerful tool enables users to filter search criteria by animal kingdom, plant, fungi, and geographical information related to protected sites in Iceland. The implementation unlocks valuable scientific data, making it more accessible to users.
Beyond the user interface, 1xINTERNET focused on enhancing the editorial experience for the NÍ team—the Drupal 9 environment streamlines manual editorial tasks, providing a seamless content updating and maintenance process. Notable advancements were also made to the translation feature of the core module, simplifying the overall translation process.
