The Drupal Project Update: Highlights from DrupalSouth Sydney 2024
DrupalSouth is back in the iconic Sydney Masonic Centre for its 2024 edition. Three days of presentations, discussions, code, and camaraderie have already begun. The conference, bringing together the Australian and New Zealand Drupal communities, aims to cover more topics with additional rooms and tracks, fostering a collaborative environment through more spaces for informal gatherings and focused discussions.
DrupalSouth Sydney's major highlight is its keynote sessions. Dries Buytaert, the pioneer of Drupal, delivered the inaugural keynote on the topic "The Drupal Project Update." He began his session with the Open Source manifesto and moved to the core topic, the Drupal Project.
Dries discussed Drupal's being named a Digital Public Good by the Digital Public Good Alliance and reiterated that one in eight enterprise websites uses Drupal.
Collective purpose is what sets Drupal apart from the rest of the CMSs out there. It is a purpose driven by the ethos of open-source, by its end users, other contributors, and each person in the Drupal Community.
He also took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about the first-ever DrupalCon in Antwerp, when 30 Drupal developers gathered.
The real question of the Keynote is how to get more people to use Drupal.
"And so we went through a strategic exercise with the Drupal Association and we identified that there are two main things that have to be done, first, we need to drive innovation because, at the end of the day, everything starts or stops with the product. Secondly, we need to drive marketing."
said Dries Buytaert.
He also mentioned that the Drupal Community has to increase contributions, whether code, financial, or any contribution to drive marketing. Dries also felt that to achieve more contributions, Drupal Community should be able to have a clear focus on,
"who we are and what we are for etc...etc..."
