Bostjan Kovac Shares Vital Insights on Onboarding Next-Gen Drupal Engineers

Agiledrop recently shared a blog post authored by Bostjan Kovac, the Development Director at Agiledrop. In the post, Kovac discussed his session at DrupalCon Lille, focusing on "How to onboard the next generation of Drupal engineers."

Last week, at DrupalCon Lille, Kovac addressed one of the top priorities for the Drupal community, an issue that has also gained prominence with the Drupal Association. Kovac's talk delved into the challenges and opportunities surrounding onboarding the next generation of Drupal engineers.

One of the significant hurdles in attracting new generations of developers to Drupal is the prevailing perception of PHP and Drupal. Once a widely favoured language, PHP has seen its popularity wane. Many developers now harbour misconceptions about PHP, believing it to be a "dead" language, an idea exacerbated by old PHP-based projects with subpar codebases.

Furthermore, emerging job opportunities in more specialized programming languages such as Rust and Go often come with higher salaries, attracting developers with the promise of solving complex, high-value problems. These languages appeal more to newer developers despite the steep learning curve and experience required in older, more traditional languages like PHP.

A proactive approach is necessary to address these challenges and attract new talent to Drupal agencies. It is not sufficient to merely post job ads for PHP/Drupal developers and hope for suitable candidates to apply. Instead, agencies must commit to actively promoting Drupal and actively seek individuals who are exploring their interests in web development.

Mentoring and impressing such individuals can be a key strategy in overcoming the challenges of onboarding the next generation of Drupal engineers.

In his blog post, Kovac provides a detailed breakdown of the main points from his DrupalCon Lille session, offering practical insights and recommendations for the Drupal community on tackling these issues.
